A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
